2009 Major Exhibitions, Trade Fairs, Cultural Programs and Festival Celebrations of China

Spring Festival

Time: 1st day of the 1st lunar month, which falls on January 26 in 2009
City: All over China
Spring Festival originated in the sacrificial ceremony held shortly after the winter solstice during the early Xia Dynasty (21st-16th century BC), when China was still in the primitive society. The ritual was designed to repay the blessings of the god and celebrate bumper harvests. Today, it has become the foremost of all traditional festivals for the Chinese people.

Lantern Festival
Time: 15th day of the 1st lunar month, which falls on February 9 in 2009
City: All over China
The Lantern Festival has its origin in the Han Dynasty. King Wen of the Western Han Dynasty officially designated the 15th day of the 1st lunar month as Lantern Festival, and during the reign of King Wu of the Han Dynasty, the Chinese began to celebrate this festival with lantern shows. The practice gradually became part of the Chinese folklore and is celebrated in pomp and pageantry. During the Song Dynasty, "yuan xiao", a kind of dumplings made of glutinous rice flour and sweet stuffing, were invented. Such dumplings are boiled in water until they float. They are made exclusively in celebration of the Lantern Festival, which is also called "Yuanxiao Festival".

Mid-Autumn Festival
Time: 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which falls on Oct 3, 2009
City: All over China
Also referred to as the Mooncake Festival, this important event is one of the highlights of the Chinese calendar. In celebration of the summer harvest, everyone in China gets together with family and friends to enjoy good food and drinks. During the day spectacles such as fire dragon dances roll through the streets and at night the city lights up with the warm glow of lanterns in every house.


Inter Airport China 2008
Time: Dec 2 - 4 2008
City: Beijing
There is no let-up in airport development in China. Between 2006 and 2010, investments in airport infrastructure of USD17.4 billion are planned. Over this period the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) plans to construct 42 new airports as the country's economy continues to grow. This will put more than 70 per cent of the population within 100 km of an airport.

As well as building new airports, China is investing heavily to add capacity at existing facilities - all to keep pace with rising passenger numbers and cargo volumes. In 2005, China's airports handled 284 million passengers - 17.5 per cent up on the previous year. Cargo volumes also rose by more than 14 per cent and a similar increase was recorded for flight movements.

Organized in response to industry requests, Inter Airport China 2008 will be the third of these events to take place in Beijing. Meet in Beijing Arts Festival

Meet in Beijing Arts Festival is a large-scale international festival hosted by China's Ministry of Culture, Beijing Municipality Government and the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. The Festival was inaugurated in 2000 and is held for a designated period of time each year with different themes. Meet in Beijing Arts Festival has established itself as China's national-level artistic activity and topped its Asian competitors. Now it has turned into Beijing's famous cultural brand.

In an effort to further promote Chinese traditional culture and bring the best of foreign performing arts and other visual arts into China, Meet in Beijing Arts Festival provides a stage for both Chinese artists and foreign artists. The 12th Beijing Music Festival
Time: Oct 15 - Nov 15, 2009
City: Beijing
The Beijing Music Festival, initiated and approved by the Culture Ministry of China and the Beijing Municipal Government in 1998, is held in Beijing annually. With great contributions to world culture and arts exchanges, the Beijing Music Festival has become a symbolic cultural activity of Beijing and a world famous international music ceremony, inviting distinguished musicians and music groups from home and abroad.

The festival offers a wide variety of music performances, including opera, symphonic, solo concert, chamber music concert, classical jazz concert, song and dance drama, and vocal concert. It has attracted artists and audience form all over the world. As an international music gala, the festival will certainly continue to make great contribution to the worldwide cultural exchange and prosperity.

The 12th China Wuqiao International Circus Festival
Time: Oct-Nov, 2009
City: Shijiangzhuang, Hebei (close to Beijing)
China Wuqiao International circus Festival-CWICF, which is named after the famous birthplace of acrobatics---Wuqiao, Hebei, is a magnificent and comprehensive international meeting of circus. CWICF has now become a splendid racing place of acrobatics famous both in China and abroad. Every country who is good at acrobatics has sent acrobatics groups to participate in the festival, altogether, there has been more than 30 countries and over 180 programs appearing on the stage of CWICF, so the scale, the quality and the organizing methods of CWICF all reached an international standard.

CWICF promoted the exchange and flourish of acrobatics arts domestic and foreign, and it has great influence in the world and has been honored with "The Oriental Acrobatics Racing Place of the World".

The 11th China Shanghai International Arts Festival

The China Shanghai International Arts Festival aims to absorb the best cultures around the world, to promote Chinese traditional arts, and to enhance cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. The festival commits itself to encouraging innovation and introducing the classics. The festival activities include art program shows, art exhibitions, the mass cultural activities and trade fair of programs, arts and crafts.

2008 Northeast Asia Development Forum
Time: Oct 27-28, 2008
City: Shenyang
On October 27, 2008 Northeast Asia Development Forum opens in Liaoning Friendship Hotel. Guests from South Korea, Japan, Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, North Korea, America, France, Finland and so on came to Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning province, attended the forum.
The topic of this time forum is "District, City, Enterprise and Government". Delegates, officials, experts, social groups and organizations from more than 20 countries attended the opening ceremony. Delegates from Liaoning province, Jilin province and Heilongjiang also attended the opening ceremony.
Northeast of China is a very important part of Northeast Asia. Held in Liaoning, the Northeast Asia Development Forum is purpose to contribute to the economic development of Northeast Asia and provide the platform for cooperation and communication in the area of Northeast Asia.

The 2nd China Northeast Asia (Shenyang) Import Fair

Shenyang International Ice and Snow Festival

First held in 1993, Shenyang International Ice and Snow Festival is one of China's increasingly celebrated winter tourist events. The festival combines recreation, sports and sight-seeing and it attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year. The festival has become a major contributor to the prosperity of tourism in Shenyang as well as Liaoning Province as a whole.

Dependent upon the weather, the festival can last for up to a month during the period from December to February and always gets under way with a magnificent opening ceremony. Dalian International Hotspring and Ski Festival

The 1st Traditional Medicine Exhibition
Time: September, 2008
City: Lhasa, Tibet
China is to hold its first exhibition on traditional medicine of ethnic groups in Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, in September. The exhibition is to display medical products made by minority pharmaceutical companies along with other Chinese pharmacies and Western medicine.

The exhibition will boost the exchange of information among different ethnic groups, especially in the area of health care. China has abundant medical resources in minority-inhabited areas. These regions are home to more than 8,000 traditional medicines, accounting for nearly two thirds of the total traditional Chinese medicine resources.

The 106th China Import and Export Fair
