2009 Major Exhibitions, Trade Fairs, Cultural
Programs and Festival Celebrations of China
Spring Festival
Time: 1st day of the 1st lunar month, which falls
on January 26 in 2009
City: All over China
Spring Festival originated in the sacrificial ceremony
held shortly after the winter solstice during the
early Xia Dynasty (21st-16th century BC), when China
was still in the primitive society. The ritual was
designed to repay the blessings of the god and celebrate
bumper harvests. Today, it has become the foremost
of all traditional festivals for the Chinese people.
Lantern Festival
Time: 15th day of the 1st lunar month, which falls
on February 9 in 2009
City: All over China
The Lantern Festival has its origin in the Han Dynasty. King
Wen of the Western Han Dynasty officially designated
the 15th day of the 1st lunar month as Lantern Festival,
and during the reign of King Wu of the Han Dynasty,
the Chinese began to celebrate this festival with
lantern shows. The practice gradually became part
of the Chinese folklore and is celebrated in pomp
and pageantry. During the Song Dynasty, "yuan xiao",
a kind of dumplings made of glutinous rice flour and
sweet stuffing, were invented. Such dumplings are
boiled in water until they float. They are made exclusively
in celebration of the Lantern Festival, which is also
called "Yuanxiao Festival".
Mid-Autumn Festival
Time: 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which falls
on Oct 3, 2009
City: All over China
Also referred to as the Mooncake Festival, this important
event is one of the highlights of the Chinese calendar.
In celebration of the summer harvest, everyone in
China gets together with family and friends to enjoy
good food and drinks. During the day spectacles such
as fire dragon dances roll through the streets and
at night the city lights up with the warm glow of
lanterns in every house.
Inter Airport China 2008
Time: Dec 2 - 4 2008
City: Beijing
There is no let-up
in airport development in China. Between 2006 and
2010, investments in airport infrastructure of USD17.4
billion are planned. Over this period the Civil Aviation
Administration of China (CAAC) plans to construct
42 new airports as the country's economy continues
to grow. This will put more than 70 per cent of the
population within 100 km of an airport.
As well as building new airports, China is investing
heavily to add capacity at existing facilities - all
to keep pace with rising passenger numbers and cargo
volumes. In 2005, China's airports handled 284 million
passengers - 17.5 per cent up on the previous year.
Cargo volumes also rose by more than 14 per cent and
a similar increase was recorded for flight movements.
Organized in response to industry requests, Inter
Airport China 2008 will be the third of these events
to take place in Beijing. With the organizers' long-established
experience in staging inter airport events globally
and the success of previous exhibitions in China,
this latest show will again provide companies serving
the airport sector with an unparalleled opportunity
to present their capabilities in this unique dynamic
